Quick Hits: Scaling | Referral Idea | Lead like a Pirate

Olympics are finally here and wow it feels really good to root for the USA to beat down on our rival countries (in a very sportsmanlike manor of course)!

BUT as I’m writing this, the medal count is a little too close for comfort.

It’s so inspiring to see people who are so devoted and focused on one aspect of their life for so long, finally come to a victorious moment. Even more inspiring to hear the stories of how they got there.

When you look at the medal count, they are just numbers, but when you hear the stories of the athletes and where they came from, their families, their upbringing and the hours of training they go through every day, it makes you root for them even more.

Goes to show us how important stories are in what we do. People don’t care as much about the numbers or even how much you know, they want to know how devoted you’ve been, where you came from and why you work hard every day. That’s why they become your client…your story.

And I digress.

Articles on Leadership

What Pirates Can Teach Us About Leadership – HBR

  • If any of you know me well, you know I love pirates! This article spoke to me just on the title!
  • “A sense of ownership is powerful. Any pirate could lodge complaints or concerns without fear of reprisal, as crew members were protected by “articles”—essentially, a constitution drafted for each ship…The articles gave all crew members a sense of personal investment: They felt their actions mattered.”
  • “AM I THE CAPTAIN THAT MY CREW WOULD CHOOSE AS ITS LEADER TODAY?”
  • “Pirate captains served at the pleasure of their crew, which meant they understood they had to earn the trust of their crewmates. Our work lives would be markedly different if we embraced the same way of thinking, asking ourselves on a day-to-day basis the same question Blackbeard would: Am I the captain that my crew would choose as its leader today? This powerful question can center our attention and energy on the very conditions that will help everyone on our crew thrive—and make the conquests that matter.”

The Leadership Journey: 5 Things To Pack For The Road – Forbes

  • “It is unavoidable that people will hurt and disappoint you. Decide not to carry the weight of unforgiveness, malice, vengeance, or anything that can entangle and slow you down. Also, if you’re going to go far on your leadership journey, you can’t afford to drag the past along with you. Let it go.”
  • “All that glitters isn’t gold. Leadership goes beyond having a title or position. Leadership is a verb. You become a leader by doing—getting into the arena, getting your hands dirty, and helping others along the way. In reality, many people want the perks of leadership without the responsibility that comes with it.”
